GEORGE POPEL, M.D.

    Dr. George Popel is founder and current medical director of The Eye Center of Delaware.  Dr. Popel was one the first ophthalmologists (i.e., eye surgeons) in the Wilmington area to perform "no-stitch" cataract surgery using phacoemulsification (or ultrasound), which is the standard today.  He also evaluates and treats many other eye conditions of the eye including glaucoma.  He performs laser and surgery for patients with glaucoma.    

    Dr. Popel graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Fordham University in 1965 and Cornell Medical College in 1969.  He completed his internship in Internal Medicine prior to an one-year residency in neurology at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City.  Dr. Popel then completed his ophthalmology residency at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmiry in 1974 .  Dr. Popel is a member of The American Academy of Ophthalmology, The Delaware Academy of Ophthalmology, The International Academy of Ophthalmology, and The Medical Society of Delaware, The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and The American Medical Association.

 

WAYNE DUNN, M.D.

     Dr. Wayne Dunn is a board-certified vitreoretinal surgeon for The Eye Center of Delaware.  His advanced training and expertise is in the evaluation and treatment of diseases of the posterior segment of the eye (or the back part of the eye, including the retina and vitreous).  Dr. Dunn evaluates and treats all retinal diseases of the eye including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachments, and other diseases of the retina. 

    Dr. Dunn graduated from New York University with a bachelor's in economics.  He then received his medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago, IL in 1991.  After completing his internship at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital, he received his ophthalmology residency training at Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY.  Afterwards, Dr. Dunn completed additional fellowship training in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at the University of Toronto.  Prior to joining The Eye Center of Delaware, Dr. Dunn was a former director of the Georgia Retinal Eye Center before moving to Pennsylvania, where he was a retinal consultant and surgeon with Retina and Diabetic Eye Specialists.  He is currently an active member of The American Academy of Ophthalmology, The Delaware Academy of Ophthalmology, and The Medical Society of Delaware.

 

TERRY KWAK, M.D. 

     Dr. Terry Kwak is the cornea and refractive surgery specialist for The Eye Cener of Delaware.  His advanced training and expertise is in the evaluation and treatment of diseases of the cornea (or the front aspect of the eye).  Dr. Kwak also received advanced training in laser vision correction surgery, and treats patients for refractive errors (i.e., the need for glasses to correct vision) using the latest technology for LASIK.  He also practices comprehensive ophthalmology, including the evaluation and management of glaucoma, cataract and other diseases involving front part of the eye (or anterior segment).  He also performs cataract surgery as well as other anterior segment surgeries.

    Dr. Kwak graduated from Kent State University with a bachelors degree in the Honors college and then completed his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA.  Subsequently, he completed his internship in Internal Medicine at the Graduate Hospital, followed by a residency in ophthalmology at The State University of New York (SUNY) - Brooklyn Health Sciences Center, where he was distinguished as Chief Resident during his third year.  Dr. Kwak then completed advanced medical and surgical fellowship training in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in Manhattan, NY.  Dr. Kwak is an active member of The American Academy of Ophthalmology, The Delaware Academy of Ophthalmology, The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, The Cornea Society, American Research for Vision and Ophthalmology, The Medical Society of Delaware, and The American Medical Association. 

 

JEFFREY BOYD, M.D.

    Dr. Jeffrey Boyd is a comprehensive ophthalmologist, able to provide the full spectrum of eye care to his patients.  He has particular interests in small incision cataract surgery, glaucoma, and laser vision correction surgery.  He is a native of Wilmington, Delaware and graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Delaware, with a double major in biology and chemistry.  He received his M.D. from Temple University.  After completing a one year post-doctoral medical internship at Albert Einstein Medical Center, he performed a three year ophthalmology surgical residency at Georgetown University and the Washington Hospital Center.  He was selected to the esteemed position of Chief Resident during his final year of residency.  Dr. Boyd lives in nearby Avondale, PA with his wife, Sue, and their dogs, Bentley and Sophie.  Dr. Boyd is currently accepting new patients. 

 

CHRISTOPHER DAVOLOS, O.D.

     Dr. Christopher Davolos is a board certified Optometrist specializing in primary eye care, and specialty contact lenses. He is experienced in medical management of ocular diseases. Born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware, he earned his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree from the University of Delaware. He attended the Pennsylvania College of Optometry earning his Doctorate of Optometry (O.D.) in 2004. He completed internships in private practice, and at the Elsmere Veterans Hospital.  Dr. Davalos is a member of The American Optometric Association and The Delaware Optometric Association.
